The purpose of a softener is narrow and mechanical: it removes the dissolved calcium and magnesium that form scale, and puts a small amount of sodium in their place. Everything people like about soft water, from cleaner glassware to appliances that last longer, follows from that single exchange. Everything it fails at follows from it too.
The exchange, in one paragraph
Hard water is carried through a tank of resin beads that hold sodium ions loosely. Calcium and magnesium bind to the resin more strongly, so they stick and the sodium is released into the water. When the resin is saturated, the control valve draws strong brine from the salt tank, strips the hardness minerals off and flushes them to the drain. That regeneration cycle is the only reason a softener needs salt, a drain line and a timer at all.
What that buys you around the house
Scale stops forming inside the water heater, the dishwasher and the kettle, which is where the running cost of hard water actually sits. Soap and detergent lather with far less product because the minerals that were binding them are gone. Shower screens and taps stop growing white crust, and laundry comes out less stiff. None of this is dramatic on day one: it shows up over months as things stop degrading.
The limits, stated honestly
A softener is not a filter and not a purifier. It leaves chlorine taste, bacteria, nitrate, lead and organic contaminants exactly where it found them, because ion exchange resin is not aimed at any of them. It adds sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which matters to anyone on a restricted intake. And it needs salt, a drain and periodic attention, so it is a machine you own rather than a fitting you forget.

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and the USGS classifies water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above that. Questions people ask about purpose of water softener
Does a water softener make water safe to drink?
No. It removes hardness minerals only, and leaves chlorine, bacteria, lead and nitrate untouched. Safety is a separate question with separate equipment.
Does softened water taste salty?
It should not. The sodium added is proportional to the hardness removed and is well below the level most people can taste, though very hard supplies add more.
Can I soften only the hot water?
You can plumb it that way and some households do, but you lose the benefit at cold taps, in the dishwasher feed and in the laundry supply.
Is a softener worth it on moderately hard water?
Often marginal. The case gets stronger the further into the hard and very hard bands your supply sits, which is why the test result comes first.
