Water scale: why it forms and how to stop it

Water scale is the chalky white deposit that hard water leaves on kettles, shower heads, glass doors and heating elements. It is calcium and magnesium coming out of solution, and it forms fastest where water is heated or allowed to evaporate, which is why appliances suffer long before the pipework does.

Where scale comes from

The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, classing water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180. Groundwater picks those minerals up from limestone and chalk, so hardness varies enormously by region and even by well. As long as the minerals stay dissolved they are invisible. Heat and evaporation drive them out of solution as a solid, and the solid bonds to whatever surface is nearest.

Heat is the accelerant

Calcium carbonate is unusual in becoming less soluble as water gets hotter, so a water heater element, a boiler heat exchanger and a tankless unit's narrow passages are the first places scale appears. That layer acts as insulation, so the appliance runs longer and hotter to deliver the same result and eventually fails from the stress. Steam ovens, coffee machines, ice makers and humidifiers concentrate scale the same way, by evaporating water and leaving the minerals behind.

Removing hardness against inhibiting scale

An ion-exchange softener removes the calcium and magnesium at the point of entry, so scale simply stops forming anywhere downstream and your water tests soft. Salt-free conditioners take a different route: template-assisted crystallization encourages the minerals to form microscopic crystals that stay suspended rather than sticking to surfaces. Your water remains as hard on a test, laundry and soap behaviour do not change, and the benefit is confined to reduced deposition. Choose by which of those outcomes you actually want.

Dealing with the scale you already have

Treatment prevents new deposits; it does not dissolve old ones quickly. Shower heads and aerators come off and soak in a descaling solution. Kettles and coffee machines have their own descaling cycles. A water heater with years of buildup usually needs draining and flushing, and a badly scaled tankless unit needs a proper circulation descale. Questions people ask about water scale

Is water scale harmful to drink?

No. Calcium and magnesium are dietary minerals and hardness is not a health-based standard. Scale is a cost and maintenance problem, not a safety one.

Why does scale appear on my shower head but not my cold taps?

Heat and evaporation drive minerals out of solution. Hot fixtures and anywhere water dries between uses collect scale first, while cold running lines stay clear longer.

Do magnetic scale devices work?

Independent evidence is thin and inconsistent, and they remove no hardness at all. If you want a measurable change in your water, an ion-exchange softener is the tested route.
