The three checks that identify the cause
First, hot or cold. If only the hot tap runs yellow, the water heater is the suspect: sediment and rust accumulate in the bottom of the tank and the anode rod may be spent. Second, one tap or all of them. A single fixture points at that branch, its supply line or its aerator, while every tap in the house points upstream at the well, the service line or the main. Third, the standing glass. Fill a clear glass and leave it. If particles settle and the water clears from the top down, you have suspended iron or silt. If the color is uniform and stays put overnight, you are looking at dissolved tannins or dissolved iron that has yet to oxidize.
Iron and manganese
These are the most common cause on a private well and a frequent one on older municipal mains. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, which classes them as nuisance contaminants judged on staining and taste rather than health. Iron gives orange to yellow-brown color and rust colored stains; manganese runs darker, toward brown and black, and shows up as specks in the toilet cistern. Dissolved iron arrives clear and turns color in the glass as it oxidizes, which is the tell that separates it from tannins.
Tannins, mains work and heaters
Tannins tint the water evenly a tea or straw color that does not settle out, come from organic matter in the ground, and are most common in shallow wells and wells near wetlands. Distribution system disturbance is the temporary explanation: hydrant flushing, firefighting or a main break stirs up accumulated deposits, the water runs yellow for hours, and running a cold tap until it clears is the entire fix. A water heater that produces yellow hot water only usually needs flushing and its anode rod inspected, and past a certain age of tank the color is the first warning of a failure that will end in a wet floor.
