Yellow water from the tap and what to do about it

Yellow water is the most common discoloration complaint and it is rarely an emergency, but it does real damage to laundry, fixtures and patience. The useful response is a short sequence: establish whether it is your house or the street, protect the things that stain permanently, then find the cause before buying equipment. Most households can get through the first two steps in an afternoon.

Ask a neighbor, and run a cold outside tap for several minutes. Discoloration across several properties, appearing suddenly, usually follows a main flush, hydrant use or a pressure change that lifted settled deposit off the pipe wall, and it typically clears once the disturbed material has passed. That is a call to the utility, not a purchase. Discoloration in one house alone points inside: a corroding water heater if only the hot side is affected, aging galvanized pipework if it is worst first thing in the morning, or the source itself on a private well.

Protect the laundry first

Iron staining on fabric sets and becomes very hard to remove, and the worst thing to do is run a stained load through a normal wash with ordinary detergent and then dry it, since heat fixes it. Stop washing until the water runs clear. Do not use chlorine bleach on iron stained fabric, because it oxidizes the iron and turns a faint yellow into a fixed brown. Use a rust removing laundry product made for the purpose. The same applies to fixtures: wipe basins and toilet bowls before deposits dry rather than scrubbing them later.

Finding the cause without guessing

Let a glass stand for an hour. Water that clears from the top down as particles settle is carrying oxidized iron or disturbed sediment. Water that stays uniformly colored is carrying something dissolved: iron that has not yet oxidized, manganese, or tannins from decaying vegetation on a shallow or surface influenced source. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, which is the figure a laboratory test will be compared against.

Matching the fix to the finding

Dissolved iron within a softener's limits can be handled by the softener, and Penn State notes that works where pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L. Heavier iron loads want an oxidizing filter, and oxidized iron fouls softener resin rather than passing through it, so the form matters as much as the amount. Is yellow water dangerous to drink?

Iron, manganese and tannins are aesthetic problems at typical household levels rather than acute hazards, but sudden discoloration can follow a main break, so check with the utility first.

Can iron stains be washed out of clothes?

Only with a rust removing laundry product, and only before heat has set them. Chlorine bleach makes iron staining worse by oxidizing it to a fixed brown.

Why is the water only yellow in the morning?
