Why is my water yellow, and what the color is telling you

Yellow water has a short list of causes and they can be separated at the tap in about ten minutes. The three checks that matter are whether it clears when it stands, whether it affects hot water only, and whether the neighbors have it too. Work through those before spending anything, because the answers point at completely different fixes and one of them costs nothing at all.

Three checks that identify the cause

Draw a glass and let it stand. If particles settle and the water clears from the top down, you are looking at suspended matter, typically oxidized iron or stirred up sediment. If the color is uniform and stays that way, it is dissolved: iron that has not yet oxidized, manganese, or tannins. Next, compare hot and cold taps, since a yellow that appears only on the hot side points at the water heater rather than the supply. Finally ask a neighbor, because a whole street with discolored water is a main flushing or a hydrant event, not a household problem.

Iron and manganese, the usual answer on a well

Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Above those the water stains laundry and fixtures and takes on a yellow to brown cast, while manganese leans darker and greyer. Both may leave the well clear and dissolved, then color as they meet air. Treatment follows the form and the load: a softener can handle modest dissolved iron within its limits, while heavier loads want an oxidizing filter, and oxidized iron fouls softener resin rather than passing through it.

Tannins, and how they differ from iron

Water that is uniformly yellow to tea colored, clear rather than cloudy, does not settle out, and comes from a shallow well or a surface influenced source is usually carrying tannins: organic material leached from decaying vegetation and peat. They are not a health hazard in themselves but they stain and they carry an earthy taste. Iron treatment will not touch them, which is the usual reason a household ends up with an oxidizing filter and yellow water. Tannins need an anion exchange resin or, at lower loads, oxidation followed by carbon.

When it is the plumbing or the main, not the water

Yellow that appears suddenly on the cold side across the whole street usually follows a main flush, a hydrant being used, or a pressure change that has lifted settled deposit from the pipe wall. Run a cold outside tap for several minutes and it typically clears; if it does not, call the utility. Yellow on the hot side alone points at a corroding water heater or a sacrificial anode nearing the end of its life.
