What hardness is and where you sit
The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, and classifies water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180, and very hard above 180 mg/L. That single number predicts most of what you are experiencing. Below the soft band a softener changes almost nothing you would notice. In the hard and very hard bands, scale forms visibly on every wet surface and inside every pipe and appliance that heats water. Getting your figure from a laboratory report or your utility's report is the first step, because the whole case for the equipment rests on it.

Scale stops forming, so kettles, shower heads, faucet aerators and glass doors stay clear instead of needing acid cleaning. Soap and detergent lather instead of reacting with the minerals, which means less product for the same result and no chalky film on dishes or stiff residue in towels. Water heating equipment keeps its heat transfer surface clean, which is the quiet benefit, since scale inside a tank or on a heat exchanger works as insulation. Skin and hair feel different too, mostly because soap rinses off properly rather than leaving a curd behind. What a softener does not do
It is not a filter. A softener will not remove chlorine, taste, odor, sediment, bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, PFAS or lead, and it is not a substitute for testing. Its ability to handle iron is limited and conditional: Penn State Extension notes that a softener can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, while oxidized iron fouls the resin. Outside those bounds you need a dedicated iron filter ahead of it. The running commitments
A salt-based unit needs salt in the brine tank, a drain to discharge to, and a power supply for the valve. It regenerates on a schedule or on metered volume, and each regeneration sends brine to the drain, which some jurisdictions restrict. Resin lasts years but not forever, particularly where chlorine or iron reaches it. Salt-free conditioners avoid salt, drains and discharge by changing how the minerals crystallize rather than removing them, so scale is reduced without the water becoming soft in the laboratory sense, and soap behavior does not change. Questions people ask about advantage of water softener
Does a water softener make water safer to drink?
No. It removes hardness minerals only. Contaminants such as bacteria, nitrate, lead or PFAS pass straight through and need testing and separate treatment.
Will softened water damage my plumbing?
Softened water is not aggressive by itself, but very soft water on old pipes can carry more from the pipe wall, which is one reason a test after install is worth doing.
