What is silica in water and does it need removing?

Silica is dissolved silicon dioxide, and it enters groundwater from the rock and sand the water passed through. It is present in almost every natural supply, it is not a health concern at the levels found in drinking water, and it is a real practical nuisance because the deposit it leaves behind is far harder to remove than ordinary limescale.

Why it is confused with hardness

Silica deposits look like scale, form in the same places and are blamed on the same cause, but hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium and silica is neither. That distinction matters because a softener removes calcium and magnesium and leaves silica completely untouched. So a household with a working softener that still gets a stubborn white film on glass and fixtures is often looking at silica, and concluding wrongly that the softener has failed.

Where it shows up

As a hard, glassy film on shower screens, glassware and taps that resists the descalers and vinegar that clear carbonate scale in minutes. As spotting on cars that will not polish off. And, in equipment terms, as fouling on reverse osmosis membranes, where silica can polymerize on the surface and is one of the harder foulants to clean off. Boilers and steam systems care about it for the same reason. Domestically it is cosmetic; in equipment it shortens component life.

What actually removes it

Reverse osmosis handles it well and is the practical domestic answer at a drinking tap or for a specific rinse. Strong base anion exchange removes it in industrial settings. Distillation removes it. What does not remove it is a softener, a sediment cartridge, carbon in any form, or a scale conditioner, and all four are sold to people whose actual problem is silica. Test for it specifically if the deposits resist acid, since a standard hardness test says nothing about silica.

Whether it is worth treating

Usually not on its own. Where the complaint is cosmetic, drying surfaces promptly after use and using a mildly abrasive cleaner made for glass deals with it for a great deal less than a treatment system. Where reverse osmosis is being fitted anyway for drinking water, silica removal comes along with it.
