What makes a digital tester worth owning
Look for three things. Calibration against standard buffer solutions, ideally two-point or three-point, because a pen that cannot be calibrated is a novelty rather than an instrument. Automatic temperature compensation, since the same water reads differently warm and cold and a pen without it will disagree with itself between summer and winter. And a replaceable electrode, because the sensing glass is a wear part and a sealed pen becomes disposable the day it drifts. A stable reading that settles quickly rather than wandering is the other sign of a decent unit, and cheap pens are usually let down there first.
Care that decides whether the readings mean anything
The electrode must be stored wet in the manufacturer's storage solution. Storing it dry ruins the sensing glass, and storing it in distilled water leaches the electrolyte and does almost as much harm. Recalibrate on a regular schedule with fresh buffers, and throw buffers away at their expiry rather than economizing, because calibrating against a degraded standard makes the tester confidently wrong. Rinse between samples with a little of the next sample rather than wiping the tip dry, since wiping builds a static charge that unsettles the reading. Keep the cap on and the sponge inside it damp between uses.
Reading water rather than reading the meter
Take the sample from a cold tap that has been run for a while, fill a clean container to the brim and test immediately, because dissolved carbon dioxide escapes from standing water and pushes the reading upward within minutes. Test both raw and treated water where you have equipment, since the difference is what tells you the equipment is doing something.
