Choosing a portable water tester for use away from home

Testing water away from a bench brings its own constraints: temperature swings, poor light for reading colors, no calibration solutions to hand, and results needed on the spot. Some instruments cope with that and others give confidently wrong answers, so the choice for field use is not simply a smaller version of the kitchen choice.

What travels well

Conductivity and TDS pens are robust, need no reagents and give a number in seconds, which makes them the natural field instrument, provided you remember what they measure. Hardness titration kits travel well too, since the drop count is a number rather than a color judgement. Digital meters with temperature compensation are worth the extra, because field samples are rarely at a convenient temperature and uncompensated readings shift with it noticeably.

What does not

Anything read as a color against a printed chart is compromised by field lighting, and the same strip read in shade, in bright sun and under a headtorch gives three different answers. Reagent based kits degrade with heat and humidity, which is exactly what a bag in a vehicle provides. And pH meters need calibration against fresh buffers, which nobody carries, so a pH meter that has been rattling around unsupported for a season should be treated as indicative rather than accurate.

What field testing cannot tell you

Whether the water is safe to drink. No portable instrument gives a bacteriological result on the spot, and conductivity, hardness and pH say nothing at all about pathogens: clear water with a low reading can carry coliform bacteria. Presence or absence bacteria kits exist and need incubation time, which makes them useful for a base camp and useless for a decision at a stream. Treat unknown field water regardless of what an instrument reads.

Using one sensibly

Rinse the probe in the sample before reading so residue from the last measurement does not skew it. Let readings settle rather than taking the first number. Record temperature alongside every result. Carry a small bottle of known solution if the readings will inform a decision, since it is the only way to know the meter has not drifted.
