Buying a water tester for home use starts with one question: are you on a municipal supply or a private well? A city customer already receives a published water quality report and is testing to see what the plumbing adds. A well owner receives nothing and is testing the source itself. Those are different shopping lists.

If you are on a public system

Your utility already tests the supply continuously and publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a finder for those reports. Read yours first and you will know your hardness, your disinfectant, and what has been detected in the system, which removes most of the guesswork about what to buy. Buy by symptom, not by parameter count

Scale on the kettle, spotted glassware and soap that will not lather point at hardness, so buy a hardness kit. A chlorine or swimming-pool smell points at your disinfectant and a chlorine kit tells you whether your carbon filter is exhausted. Orange staining points at iron; black specks at manganese; blue-green staining at copper and low pH. A rotten egg smell needs the hot-versus-cold check before any test kit at all. What most households do not need to own

Skip the electrolysis demonstration gadget, which precipitates metal from its own electrodes and proves nothing about your water. Skip a laboratory-grade pH meter unless you are running an acid neutralizer and need to verify it, since a good meter needs calibration solutions and a routine to stay honest. A TDS meter is worth owning only if you have a reverse osmosis system to monitor. And no home kit replaces a lab for bacteria, lead, arsenic or PFAS, so budget for one proper panel rather than for a collection of strips that cannot resolve the numbers that would change your decision.
