Choosing a water mineral tester that measures what you need

Testers sold as mineral testers fall into three groups measuring genuinely different quantities, and the cheapest and most widely sold one does not measure the thing most buyers want. Knowing what each instrument responds to is what stops a household concluding that a working softener has failed.

Conductivity pens

These measure how readily current passes through the water and convert that to a total dissolved solids figure. They respond to every dissolved ion without distinguishing among them, so sodium, chloride, sulfate and bicarbonate all count alongside calcium and magnesium. That makes them useless for hardness and excellent for one specific job: checking a reverse osmosis membrane by comparing feed and permeate readings, which gives a rejection rate that tracks membrane condition over time.

Titration kits and hardness strips

These use a chemical reaction specific to calcium and magnesium, which is exactly what hardness is. A titration kit adds reagent drop by drop until the sample changes color and the drop count gives the figure directly. Strips use the same chemistry less precisely but well enough to establish a band and to confirm a softener is still working. The USGS classes water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above that.

Why the pen misleads on softeners

Ion exchange swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, more or less ion for ion, so the total number of dissolved ions barely changes. Conductivity therefore reads about the same before and after the softener, and an owner checking with a pen concludes the unit has stopped working when it is doing exactly what it should. Test before and after with a hardness kit instead: that pair of readings is the honest proof, and it takes two minutes.

Sampling so the numbers mean something

Take samples from a cold tap with the aerator removed, after running until the water is cold and steady, so you measure the supply rather than what stood in the pipes overnight. Use the same tap each time so results are comparable. Temperature affects conductivity, so compare like with like. Calibrate pens against a known solution occasionally, since they drift.
