Why supplies sit where they do

What the number tells you

Alkaline water is generally benign but affects treatment: adsorptive media for arsenic lose capacity as pH rises, manganese needs a higher pH to oxidize than iron does, and chlorine disinfection is less effective as pH climbs. If you are specifying any of those, pH is a design input rather than a curiosity.

Anything about safety. Bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, lead and every other contaminant that matters are invisible to a pH meter, and a pleasant reading is not reassurance about any of them.
