Soft water pH and what a softener does to it

Ion exchange softening does not meaningfully change the pH of your water. A softener swaps calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions and leaves the acid and alkaline balance essentially where it found it, so soft water pH after treatment reads close to what the incoming water read before it. The confusion comes from naturally soft water, which is a different thing entirely.

Softened water against naturally soft water

The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, with soft water at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate and very hard water above 180. Water that is naturally soft, typically from granite catchments and rainfall-fed surface sources, is low in those minerals because it never dissolved much on its way to you, and it is often low in bicarbonate alkalinity as well. That lack of alkalinity is what makes naturally soft water more acidic and more aggressive toward plumbing. Softened water is different: the calcium and magnesium are gone, but the bicarbonate that buffers pH is still there, so the water is not left acidic by the process.

Why people say soft water corrodes pipes

The claim is usually a mix-up between the two cases above. Naturally soft, low-alkalinity water does attack copper and can leach metals from plumbing, which is why utilities in those regions run corrosion control programs. Ion exchange softened water is a milder case: removing the hardness removes the thin protective scale layer that hard water deposits inside pipes, so any underlying corrosivity is no longer masked. If your incoming water is already close to neutral and adequately buffered, a softener does not create a corrosion problem. If it is acidic before treatment, softening does not fix that, and pH correction is a separate job.

Measuring it properly

Test pH at the tap on a fresh sample, not on water that has been sitting in a bottle, because dissolved carbon dioxide escapes over time and the reading drifts upward. Take a reading before the softener and after it if you want to settle the question for your own house, using the sample taps a well-installed system should have. A digital meter that is calibrated beats a strip for anything you plan to act on. Alongside pH, ask the lab for alkalinity: it is the number that tells you whether the water can resist a pH swing, and it explains far more about corrosivity than pH alone.

When you need pH correction as well as softening

Blue-green staining, pinhole leaks in copper and a metallic taste all point at acidic water, and they are not solved by installing a softener. The usual answers on a private well are a calcite neutralizer tank ahead of the softener, which raises pH by dissolving limestone media, or a chemical injection system where flow rates or acidity are beyond what a media bed handles.
