An ultraviolet water purification system is a lamp in a sealed sleeve inside a stainless chamber, and every drop of water passing through gets a dose of UV light that stops bacteria, viruses and protozoa from reproducing. It is the standard continuous disinfection for a private well. It adds nothing to the water, changes nothing about its taste, and it only works if the water reaching it is already clear.
Why wells need it
Private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody tests or disinfects them but the owner. The EPA notes that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on private wells, and cites a USGS study of 2,100 private wells in which about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. A well that tests positive for coliform once may well do so again after heavy rain or a snow melt, which is exactly the case a UV system is built for: shock chlorination clears the well today, UV keeps it clear every day afterwards.
UV only works on water it can see through
Ultraviolet light has to reach the organism to disable it. Anything that blocks or scatters the light protects whatever is hiding behind it, so turbidity, silt, tannins, iron and manganese all reduce the effective dose. That is why a UV lamp is always the last device in the treatment train, downstream of sediment filtration and any iron or hardness treatment. Manufacturers publish water quality limits for exactly this reason, and a system fed cloudy or ferrous water will pass a visual inspection while doing far less than its rating suggests. Sizing matters too: the dose falls as flow rises, so the unit must be rated for peak household demand, not average use.
The annual maintenance nobody warns you about
A UV lamp does not burn out like a bulb. It keeps glowing while its output decays, which is why makers specify replacement roughly once a year whether or not it still looks lit. The quartz sleeve around the lamp fouls with a film of mineral and needs cleaning at the same interval, and a fouled sleeve blocks light just as effectively as cloudy water. Most modern controllers have an alarm and a lamp timer, and some include a solenoid that shuts the water off on lamp failure. If your system has no shutoff valve, a power outage means untreated water flows to the house for as long as the outage lasts.
What UV does not do
UV leaves no residual. The moment water leaves the chamber it has no ongoing protection, so contamination downstream of the lamp, in a storage tank or a length of dead pipe, is not covered. It removes nothing: hardness, iron, nitrate, arsenic, lead and every chemical contaminant pass through unchanged, and the water still tastes exactly as it did. It also does not fix the reason bacteria are getting in, which is often a cracked casing, a bad well cap or surface water finding a path down the annulus. Questions people ask about ultraviolet water purification system
How often does a UV lamp need replacing?
Typically once a year. The lamp continues to glow long after its ultraviolet output has faded, so replacement is scheduled by time rather than by whether it looks lit.
Does UV remove iron, hardness or chemicals?
No. It only disables microorganisms. Everything dissolved in the water passes through unchanged, so UV is combined with filtration or softening rather than replacing them.
What happens during a power cut?
The lamp goes out and water flows untreated unless the system has a solenoid shutoff valve. On a well the pump is off too, but stored pressure tank water can still reach fixtures.
Does UV replace shock chlorination?
No. Shock chlorination disinfects the well and plumbing itself. UV then treats the water continuously afterwards. A well that keeps testing positive needs its construction inspected.
