Ultraviolet systems are unusual in domestic water treatment because their output is invisible. A softener can be checked with a hardness test and a filter by taste, but a lamp treating water gives no sign of success or failure that a householder can see. What validation means for the equipment

A validated unit has been tested by an independent body to show that it delivers a specified dose at a specified flow rate, under defined conditions of water clarity. That is what separates a specification from a claim, and it is why duty classes exist: a unit intended for water known or suspected to carry contamination is validated to a substantially higher dose than one sold as a supplementary barrier. What the installation has to prove continuously

Ultraviolet purifies in the microbiological sense and in no other. Every dissolved mineral, metal, nitrate and chemical that entered the chamber leaves it unchanged, and there is no residual protecting the plumbing downstream. A household that reads purification as covering everything will be reassured about problems the lamp cannot touch.
