UV water purification passes the whole household supply through a chamber lit by an ultraviolet lamp, which damages the genetic material of bacteria and viruses so they cannot reproduce. It adds nothing to the water and changes nothing you can taste. It is the standard answer for a private well that tests positive for coliform, and it is useless against everything that is not alive.
Why private wells are where this comes up
The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, more than 43 million people in over 23 million households, relies on one. Nobody is testing that water for you and nobody sends you a report. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. If your annual bacteriological result comes back positive, and shock chlorination does not hold, continuous disinfection is the fix, and ultraviolet is the version that needs no chemical inventory.
What the lamp cannot do
Ultraviolet light inactivates organisms and leaves everything else exactly as it was. Hardness, iron, manganese, nitrate, arsenic, lead, sediment, tannins and chemical taste all pass through untouched. It also leaves no residual behind, so anything that recontaminates the plumbing downstream of the chamber is not covered. That is why UV is fitted as the last stage of a treatment train rather than the first, and why a positive test always means finding out how the surface contamination is getting into the well as well as treating it.
Clear water is the precondition
The dose delivered to an organism depends on how much light reaches it, and anything that clouds or colors the water shields the organism from the lamp. Sediment, tannins, iron and manganese all reduce the transmittance of the water, so a UV unit on raw well water can read as running perfectly while treating nothing. In practice that means a sediment filter ahead of the chamber at minimum, and iron or tannin removal before it where the water calls for that. Sizing, commissioning and the annual routine
A UV unit is sized to the peak flow the house can draw, not to average use, because a single open shower and a running washer together decides the dose. Undersizing shows up as nothing at all, which is the danger. After installation, the plumbing downstream should be disinfected once and then a bacteriological sample taken, because installing the unit does not clean the pipes it feeds. Then it is an annual lamp replacement whether or not the lamp still glows, periodic cleaning of the quartz sleeve, and an alarm or solenoid you actually pay attention to.
Questions people ask about uv water purification
Does UV water purification remove iron or hardness?
No. Ultraviolet light only inactivates living organisms. Iron, manganese, hardness, nitrate and every chemical contaminant pass through unchanged and need their own treatment stage.
Do I still need to test after fitting a UV system?
Yes. Test after commissioning to confirm the plumbing downstream is clean, then keep testing on your normal annual schedule, because the unit protects the water passing through it and nothing else.
Why replace the lamp if it is still lit?
Output falls with hours of use long before the lamp goes dark, so a visibly glowing lamp can be delivering too little dose. Replacement is scheduled by running time, not by whether it looks alive.
Can UV treat cloudy or colored well water?
Not reliably. Particles and color shield organisms from the light, so sediment, iron and tannins have to be removed upstream before the disinfection stage can be trusted.
