Rain arrives essentially free of dissolved minerals, which makes it naturally soft and appealing as a supply. Everything that makes it unsafe is picked up in the last few meters: on the roof, in the gutters and in the tank. Purification is therefore mostly about what the collection system contributes, and the design of that system decides how much treatment is needed afterwards.

What the roof adds

Bird and rodent droppings are the main pathogen route and the reason untreated roof water is never safe to drink. Leaves, moss, grit and insects wash in with every event. Then sediment filtration, coarse then fine, then carbon for taste, organics and any roof derived chemicals. Then ultraviolet disinfection, which needs the water genuinely clear to work at all, since turbidity shadows organisms from the lamp. For non potable duties such as toilets, laundry and irrigation, sediment filtration alone is normally sufficient and the full train is unnecessary expense.

Softness, pH and testing

Rainwater's lack of dissolved minerals is a genuine benefit for appliances and laundry, but it also makes it slightly acidic and aggressive to metal pipework and fittings, so plumbing materials need choosing accordingly and a neutralizing stage is sometimes warranted. Test the stored water rather than assuming, at least annually and after any change to the roof or tank, and remember that a UV lamp does not announce its own failure.
