A rainwater purification system is a sequence, not a single box: keep the worst material out of the tank, settle and screen what gets in, filter finely, disinfect, and correct the pH. Rain arrives nearly free of dissolved minerals, which sounds ideal until it starts dissolving your copper pipe instead.

Keep it clean before it reaches the tank

Every stage after the cistern gets easier if the water entering it is cleaner, and roof water carries leaves, grit, bird droppings and whatever the roof itself sheds. Gutter screens and a leaf eater at the downpipe take out the coarse material. A first-flush diverter dumps the initial volume off the roof, which is the dirtiest water of any storm, before the rest goes to storage. The tank itself should be opaque or shaded to stop algae, screened at every opening to keep insects and rodents out, fitted with a calmed inlet so incoming water does not stir up the settled sludge, and drawn from a floating intake below the surface rather than off the floor.

The filtration stages in order

Carbon follows, dealing with taste, odor and organic compounds picked up from the roof and the tank. Where the water is going to be drunk, many households add a very fine stage such as a ceramic element or an ultrafiltration membrane, or a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen tap. Do not put carbon or fine cartridges first: they blind almost immediately on raw tank water and the failure is a collapsing flow rate, not a warning.

Disinfection is not optional for drinking

Roof-collected water should be treated as microbiologically unsafe until it is disinfected and tested. Ultraviolet is the usual household choice: it needs clear water to work, which is why it always sits last in the train after filtration, and the lamp is replaced annually whether or not it still glows. Chlorine injection with a contact tank is the alternative, and it has the advantage of leaving a residual in the storage and pipework rather than treating only at the moment of passage. Neither removes chemicals; both address organisms. A UV lamp on cloudy water is a system that looks like it is working while doing very little.

Soft rain and corrosion

Rain has almost no dissolved calcium and magnesium, so it is soft and often acidic, and aggressive water of that kind attacks copper and galvanized pipe and can pick up metals from the plumbing on its way to the tap. A calcite or blended neutralizing filter is the standard remedy, dissolving a little mineral back into the water to raise the pH and the buffering capacity. Test the pH before deciding, then again after, because the media dissolves away and needs topping up. The upside of soft water is real: no scale, less soap, and no need for a softener at all.

Rules, testing and the missing report

Households on a municipal supply get an annual Consumer Confidence Report, which the EPA requires every community water system to publish and helps you find. Nobody publishes anything about the water off your roof. That makes routine lab testing the only way to know whether the system is working, and the sensible schedule is a bacteria test after commissioning, after any repair, and at least annually thereafter.
