Rainwater arrives almost free of dissolved minerals and picks up everything else on the way to the tank: roof debris, droppings, organic material and whatever the air carried. That combination produces a treatment train unlike a well's, because the problems are biological and organic rather than mineral, with one chemical issue that surprises people.
Keep it out before you filter it
The cheapest stage happens before the tank. A first flush diverter discards the initial run off from each rain event, which carries the accumulated droppings and debris from the roof, and a leaf screen keeps the coarse material out. Gutter guards reduce the load further. A sealed opaque tank with screened openings keeps light and insects out. None of this makes water potable, and all of it reduces what the treatment train has to remove and how quickly its filters load.
Sediment in stages, then carbon
After the tank, filtration is staged coarse to fine because the load varies: a storm changes what the tank contains within hours. A coarse cartridge or spin down first, then a finer element to polish. Then activated carbon, which is not cosmetic here: dissolved organic material from roof and vegetation gives colour, taste and odour, feeds growth downstream, and absorbs the ultraviolet wavelength that the disinfection stage depends on, so treating it is part of making disinfection reliable.
Disinfection is not optional
Assume the water carries bacteria and protozoa, because the collection path guarantees exposure to droppings and surface debris. Ultraviolet is the usual answer once the water is genuinely clear, sized on the household's peak simultaneous draw with an intensity sensor, and placed last. Chlorination with a contact tank is used where the water is difficult or where a residual is wanted through storage. Whichever is chosen, test after commissioning and periodically, since neither produces evidence of its own success.
The corrosion problem nobody expects
Rainwater is very low in dissolved minerals, which makes it soft and pleasant for washing and chemically aggressive: it slowly attacks copper, brass and cement, which puts metals into the water and shortens the plumbing's life. Systems supplying drinking water therefore usually include a calcite or remineralization stage to raise the mineral content and reduce that aggression.
