Purifying it, in the sense that matters for drinking, means dealing with the organisms the collection path guarantees are present, and that is a separate stage with its own requirements. Why disinfection is not optional here
Rain lands on a roof, runs through gutters and stands in a tank, and every one of those steps introduces bird and rodent droppings, insects and organic debris. Bacteria and protozoa should be assumed present regardless of how clear the water looks after filtration, and clarity is the least reliable indicator of safety there is. A first flush diverter and good screening reduce the load considerably and do not remove the need for a disinfection stage before anyone drinks it.
Ultraviolet, the usual choice
Rainwater suits ultraviolet well once it is properly filtered, because it is soft and low in dissolved minerals, so the quartz sleeve stays cleaner than it would on hard or iron bearing well water. The requirements are the usual ones: sediment filtration and carbon ahead of it, since dissolved organics from the roof absorb the working wavelength even when the water looks clear, flow within the unit's rating, an annual lamp change, and an intensity sensor so a fallen dose is visible.
Chlorination, and when it suits better
Dosing chlorine gives a residual that continues working in the tank and the pipework, which ultraviolet cannot, and that is a real advantage where water is stored for long periods or where the tank cannot be kept scrupulously clean. It needs a solution tank, a metering pump, contact time and a carbon filter afterwards to remove the residual before the taps. On a rainwater system it is the more robust choice for storage and the more demanding one to maintain.
Proving it, and the corrosion footnote
Neither method produces evidence of its own success, so test after commissioning and periodically afterwards, and after any event that could have introduced contamination. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and harvested rain sits further outside oversight still. One footnote: rainwater is aggressive to copper, brass and cement because it carries so little dissolved mineral, so systems supplying drinking water usually add remineralization.
