Everything the collection surface contributes ends up in the tank, so the roof material and its condition matter before any equipment does. Metal roofs are the usual choice for potable collection; asphalt shingles shed granules and organics, and treated wood shakes and some coatings contribute compounds you do not want to be filtering out later. Keep gutters clear, fit leaf screens and gutter guards, and trim branches back, because leaf litter in a warm cistern is food for growth. First flush, settling and screening
A first flush diverter sends the opening portion of each rain event, which carries the accumulated dust and droppings from the roof, to waste before the rest reaches the cistern. It is a simple standpipe with a float or a slow-drain orifice, and it needs to reset and drain between events to work, which makes it a maintenance item rather than a fitting. At the tank, an inlet calmer stops incoming water stirring settled sediment, and an overflow with an insect screen and a floating outlet draw that takes water from below the surface but above the sludge layer both improve what leaves the tank. A tank must be opaque and sealed against light, insects and animals.
The treatment train to the tap
From the pump, the sequence is coarse sediment, fine sediment, carbon, then disinfection. The sediment stages protect what follows; the carbon removes organics, color and taste. Disinfection is either ultraviolet or chlorination, and ultraviolet is the common residential choice because it adds nothing to the water. UV has a hard prerequisite: the water must be clear, since particles shield organisms from the light, so a five micron or tighter cartridge immediately ahead of the lamp is not optional. The lamp is replaced on schedule regardless of whether it still glows, and the quartz sleeve is cleaned, because film on the sleeve blocks the dose.

Private supplies sit outside the framework that covers utilities. Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and a rooftop cistern is in the same position, with local rules on potable rainwater varying considerably by state and county and in some places prohibiting it. That means two obligations fall on the owner: check what is permitted where you live before building anything, and test the water yourself on a schedule, at least for bacteria, both at the tank and at the tap.
