The most useful decision in a rainwater system is made before any equipment is chosen: what the water is for. Treating roof water for toilets, laundry and irrigation is a modest exercise. Treating it to drink is a considerably larger one, and building the second when you needed the first is the most common way money is wasted here.
Non potable use, which is most systems
Toilets, washing machines, outside taps and irrigation account for the majority of household demand, and none of it needs to be potable. For those duties the requirement is sediment removal, a screened and light proof tank so nothing grows in it, and a first flush diverter so the dirtiest part of each rainfall never enters the store. Rainwater's natural softness is a genuine advantage in a washing machine and on a garden. Plumbing must be clearly marked and physically separated from the potable system.
Potable use, and what it adds
Drinking water requires everything above plus a full train: a floating intake drawing from below the surface film and above the sediment layer, staged sediment filtration coarse to fine, activated carbon for organics, taste and any roof derived chemicals, and disinfection. Ultraviolet is the usual choice, and it depends entirely on the filtration ahead of it, since turbidity shadows organisms from the lamp. Roof material must be suitable: asbestos cement roofs and any surface used for chemical spraying rule out potable collection.
The aggressive water problem
Rain carries almost no dissolved minerals, which makes it soft and pleasant for laundry and also makes it slightly acidic and corrosive to metal. In a system with copper pipework or galvanized fittings that matters, and it shows up as blue green staining and eventually as pinhole leaks. Plastic pipework avoids the issue, and where metal is unavoidable a small neutralizing stage raises the pH. This is the aspect of rainwater treatment that is least often anticipated and most often discovered later.
Testing and upkeep
Test the stored water annually and after any change to the roof, the gutters or the tank, and after any period the system stood unused. The EPA's guidance for private supplies is the right baseline, since a rainwater system sits outside regulated monitoring in exactly the way a well does and nobody is checking it for you. Expect real maintenance: gutter clearing, first flush diverter servicing, prefilter changes after storms, UV sleeve cleaning and an annual lamp.
