Water treatment for hard water is a narrow field with three real answers: exchange the hardness minerals out with a salt-based softener, convert them so they do not stick with a salt-free conditioner, or treat only the water you drink and accept scale everywhere else. Which one is right depends on how hard the water is and what is failing because of it.
First, measure it
The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, and puts water in bands: soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180, and very hard above 180 mg/L. Where you land decides the shape of the answer. Moderately hard water with a mild spotting complaint is a different purchase from very hard water eating a water heater. Get a lab number or at least a reliable test kit reading before shopping, because vendors size equipment on grains per gallon and a guess produces the wrong machine.
Ion exchange, the full fix
A salt-based softener runs the water through a resin bed that trades sodium for calcium and magnesium, then periodically flushes the accumulated hardness to drain with brine. It is the only common treatment that genuinely removes hardness, so soap lathers, glassware comes out clear and scale stops forming anywhere downstream. It costs you a drain connection, an electrical outlet, floor space for two tanks, and the ongoing chore of keeping the salt tank filled. Where a household has both a hardness number in the high bands and visible damage, this is the treatment that actually ends the problem.
Salt-free conditioning, the partial fix
Template-assisted crystallization media encourages dissolved hardness to form microscopic crystals that stay suspended in the water instead of bonding to hot metal. Nothing is removed and nothing is regenerated, so there is no salt, no drain line, no electricity and no discharge. Scale in heaters and on heat exchangers drops substantially. What does not change is the water itself: soap performance stays poor, spotting on glass continues, and the hardness number on a test is unchanged. It is the right call where a drain is impossible or a discharge restriction applies, and the wrong call if you want soft water.
Point of use and doing nothing
If the only complaint is drinking water taste, a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink strips hardness along with everything else dissolved, and the rest of the house stays hard. That is a legitimate choice when hardness is moderate and no appliance is suffering. Doing nothing is also legitimate at the lower bands, provided you descale kettles and shower heads occasionally. Questions people ask about water treatment for hard water
Does hard water need treating at all?
Not always. At the lower hardness bands the effects are cosmetic and manageable with periodic descaling. Treatment earns its place when appliances, heaters and fixtures are visibly suffering.
Is salt-free treatment as good as a softener?
For protecting heaters from scale it helps considerably. For soft water, no: it leaves the calcium and magnesium in the supply, so soap performance and spotting are unchanged.
Can I treat only the hot water?
You can plumb a softener to feed the heater alone, which protects the appliance while saving capacity. The cold taps stay hard, so spotting and soap issues persist on the cold side.
How do I find out how hard my water is?
A home test kit gives a usable band, a mail-in lab gives a number in grains per gallon or mg/L, and a municipal supply publishes hardness in its annual water quality report.
