Sequestering feeders dose a small amount of polyphosphate that keeps hardness and iron in solution long enough to reach the tap. That is real chemistry with a real limit: it holds minerals in suspension, it does not soften, and its effect fades once water sits hot for a long period. Magnetic and electronic descalers clamp to the pipe and claim to alter crystal behavior without contact; independent evidence for household results is thin and inconsistent, so treat any claim as unproven until your own before-and-after inspection of a heating element says otherwise. How to verify the treatment worked

Removal treatment is easy to check: test the hardness of the treated water and it should read soft. Conditioning cannot be checked that way at all, because the minerals are still there by design. For a conditioner, the honest verification is physical: photograph the heating element, the shower head face or a section of the affected fixture before installation, then look again after several months of normal use. Look for softer, powdery deposits that wipe away instead of hard bonded crust. Keep the test result and the photographs, because they are the only evidence you will have if you later argue that a system is not doing what it was sold to do.
