Tankless water heaters are more vulnerable to scale than storage tanks, and for a structural reason: the heat exchanger runs at a much higher surface temperature to raise water instantly, and deposition accelerates with temperature. A scaled exchanger loses efficiency, then throws error codes, and on many units it is the most expensive part to replace.

Why these scale faster

A storage tank heats a large volume slowly across a big surface. A tankless unit forces the whole flow past a compact exchanger at high surface temperature, so calcium comes out of solution readily and deposits in narrow passages where a small thickness makes a large difference. The USGS classes water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above that, and manufacturers commonly require treatment above a stated hardness to keep the warranty valid.

Option one: a softener

Ion exchange removes calcium and magnesium outright, so no new scale forms anywhere and existing deposits lift gradually. It is the only approach that fully solves the problem and it protects every appliance and the pipework as well, not just the heater. The costs are a drain connection, salt, space and the sodium added to the water. Where the property has hard water and other appliances suffering, this is the answer regardless of the heater, and the heater simply benefits from it.

Option two: a scale conditioner

Template assisted crystallization leaves the hardness in the water and converts it into microscopic crystals that travel through rather than bonding to hot surfaces. It needs no drain, no salt and no power, which is why it suits apartments, septic systems and installations with nowhere to discharge. It greatly reduces deposition on the exchanger without removing hardness, so soap still fails to lather and spotting continues. A sediment prefilter is mandatory ahead of it and carbon protects the media on chlorinated supplies.

Option three: a polyphosphate cartridge

The smallest and cheapest of the three. A cartridge on the heater's feed adds a sequestering agent that holds hardness in solution so it is less able to deposit. It protects that one appliance, needs no drain or power, and takes little space. Its weaknesses are that it depends on continuous correct dosing with no warning when the cartridge is spent, and that polyphosphate reverts at sustained high temperature.
