Is well water hard water, and what decides it

Well water is often hard and it is not hard because it is a well. Hardness comes from the rock the water has passed through, so a well in limestone country produces hard water while a well a few counties away in granite produces very soft water, and both are entirely normal. What the well does change is that nobody is measuring it for you.

Geology is what decides it

The USGS describes hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, and groundwater picks those up by dissolving the rock it moves through. Limestone, chalk and dolomite are rich in them, so aquifers in those formations produce hard and very hard water. Granite, sandstone and volcanic formations give up far less, so wells there are frequently soft and sometimes aggressively so. Depth matters too, since deeper water has usually been in contact with rock longer.

Soft well water has its own problem

A well producing very soft water is not automatically the better outcome. Water low in dissolved minerals is often also low in alkalinity and mildly acidic, which makes it corrosive to copper pipe and brass fittings: the signs are blue green staining, a metallic taste in the morning and eventually pinhole leaks. That is a treatment problem in the opposite direction, corrected with a calcite neutralizer or soda ash injection rather than with a softener.

The difference a well really makes

Nobody publishes a figure for you. On a community supply the utility reports hardness annually at no cost; on a well the number exists only if you measure it. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so testing is entirely the owner's responsibility, and it is worth measuring hardness alongside pH, iron and manganese since those interact and specifying treatment from one alone is a common error.

What hardness means alongside the rest

On a well, hardness rarely arrives alone. Iron and manganese are common in the same formations, and Penn State Extension notes softeners handle dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, with oxidized iron fouling resin.
