Why a cartridge filter does not soften water
Sediment cartridges catch particles and carbon adsorbs organics, chlorine and taste compounds. Calcium and magnesium are dissolved ions, not particles or organics, so they slip past both. A filter can improve the taste of hard water and remove the chlorine smell, but the water leaving it is exactly as hard as the water entering it, and it will scale the kettle and the water heater just the same.
