Common well water issues, symptom by symptom

Most well water issues announce themselves as a stain, a smell or a change in how the water looks, and each of those points to a fairly short list of causes. The ones that matter most, though, give no warning at all, which is why a private well owner reads the symptoms and still tests on a schedule.

Stains, and what each color means

Orange or reddish brown staining in the tub and on laundry is iron. Black specks or grey staining points to manganese, often alongside iron. Blue green marks below a fixture indicate acidic water attacking copper plumbing, which is a pH problem rather than a metal in the source. Penn State Extension notes iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, so these are staining and taste concerns rather than health limits, but they still ruin fixtures, laundry and appliances.

Smells and where they come from

A rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide, and where you smell it narrows the cause. On both hot and cold water it usually comes from the well or the aquifer. On hot water only, it is normally a reaction involving the water heater anode rod, and changing the rod is the fix rather than treating the whole supply. A musty or earthy smell suggests organic matter or surface influence. A chemical or solvent smell is the one to stop and investigate properly, because it can indicate contamination reaching the well from nearby land use.

Cloudy, gritty and changing water

Cloudiness that clears from the bottom of a glass upward is air, harmless and usually caused by a waterlogged pressure tank or a leak drawing air on the suction side. Cloudiness that does not clear is suspended solids. Grit at the aerator is sediment, sometimes from a failing well screen or a pump drawing too close to the bottom. The important one is water that turns cloudy or discolored after heavy rain, because that indicates surface water reaching the well, and surface influence brings bacteria with it.

The problems with no symptoms

Nitrate, arsenic, radon, lead and bacteria are all invisible, tasteless and odorless at levels that matter. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and that around 15 percent of the US population relies on one, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. Questions people ask about well water issues

Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs only when hot?

That points to a reaction in the water heater involving the sacrificial anode rod rather than to the well itself. Replacing the rod with a different alloy usually resolves it.

What causes orange staining in the tub from well water?

Iron in the water oxidizing on contact with air and surfaces. It is an aesthetic problem rather than a health limit, but it stains fixtures and laundry and needs an iron removal stage.

Is cloudy well water dangerous?

Cloudiness that clears from the bottom up is trapped air and harmless. Cloudiness that does not clear, especially after heavy rain, can indicate surface water reaching the well and needs testing.

How would I know if my well had nitrate or bacteria?

You would not. Both are invisible, tasteless and odorless, which is why a private well should be tested annually and again after flooding, well work or any change in the water.
