Well water contamination: how to find it and fix it

Nobody tests your well but you. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so there is no utility sampling your water and no report landing in your mailbox. That makes contamination a question you have to ask deliberately, usually once a year and always after anything changes.

How common the problem really is

Around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on private wells according to the EPA, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. That is not a reason to panic and it is a strong reason to test: most wells are fine, a meaningful minority are not, and there is no way to tell which yours is by looking at the water.

What actually gets in, and from where

Bacteria enter through a cracked cap, a poorly grouted casing or surface water running toward the wellhead after a flood. Nitrates come from fertilizer, manure and septic systems. Arsenic, uranium, radon and fluoride occur naturally in certain geology. Fuel and solvent contamination follows tanks and industrial sites. Testing that gives you an answer worth acting on

Use a certified laboratory for anything you plan to spend money on, and follow the sampling instructions exactly, since a badly taken bacteria sample is worse than none. Test annually for coliform bacteria and nitrates, and add a broader panel every few years or when you buy the property. Retest whenever taste, color or odor changes, after flooding, after any well or pump work, and after installing treatment so you can prove it worked. Matching the fix to the finding

Bacteria call for shock chlorination to clear the immediate problem, then a permanent barrier such as ultraviolet treatment plus repair of whatever let it in. Nitrates need reverse osmosis, ion exchange or a different source, and boiling makes them worse by concentration. Arsenic needs a specific adsorptive media or reverse osmosis depending on its form. Iron and sulfur need oxidizing filters. There is no single system that handles everything, which is why the test comes first.
