UV light for water purification is germicidal ultraviolet at a wavelength that damages the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts so they cannot reproduce. It is not a filter and removes nothing from the water. Whether it works in your house comes down to one thing: whether every organism passing the lamp receives enough energy, and that is a matter of lamp output, water clarity and flow.
Dose is output multiplied by time
The energy any organism receives depends on how brightly the lamp is shining where the organism passes and how long it stays in the light. Manufacturers rate a chamber for a given dose at a given flow rate, and that pairing is the whole specification. Run water through faster than the rating and each organism spends less time in the light, so the delivered dose falls even though the lamp is unchanged. This is why a unit that performs perfectly on a single tap can underperform on a whole house where several fixtures open together, and why sizing to peak simultaneous demand matters more than sizing to the number of bathrooms.
Clarity, the quartz sleeve and the invisible failure
The lamp never touches the water. It sits inside a quartz sleeve, and water flows around that sleeve. Anything that clouds the water or coats the quartz cuts the light reaching the far side of the flow path. Hardness scale, iron, manganese and tannins all build a film on the sleeve slowly enough that nobody notices, and suspended particles can shelter an organism from the light entirely. The measure of how well water passes ultraviolet is its transmittance, which is why proper installations put sediment and, where needed, iron and hardness treatment ahead of the chamber. A dirty sleeve is the commonest reason a working system stops working.
Lamps age long before they die
A germicidal lamp does not fail like a household bulb. Its output declines steadily through its service life while it continues to glow perfectly well to the eye, and by the end of the rated period it is producing meaningfully less germicidal energy than when new. That is why every manufacturer specifies annual replacement rather than replacement on failure, and why a visible glow proves only that the ballast is powering the lamp. What UV cannot do, and who needs it
UV inactivates microorganisms and does nothing else. It leaves hardness, lead, nitrate, arsenic, PFAS, iron, chlorine, taste and odor exactly where they were, and it leaves no residual disinfectant in the plumbing, so contamination entering downstream of the chamber is untreated. It is the right purchase for a supply with a microbiological risk and no other way of disinfecting it, which in practice means private wells and spring or surface sources. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population relies on them, so continuous disinfection on those supplies is the owner's decision alone.
Questions people ask about uv light for water purification
Do I have to change the UV lamp every year even if it still lights?
Yes. Germicidal output falls steadily through the lamp's service life while it keeps glowing, so a visible glow tells you the ballast works, not that the dose is adequate.
Does UV light change the taste of the water?
No. Nothing is added or removed, so taste, smell, minerals and hardness are unchanged. Taste problems need carbon filtration, which is a separate stage.
How often should the quartz sleeve be cleaned?
At least at every lamp change, and sooner on hard or iron-bearing water. Film on the sleeve blocks light without any outward sign that treatment has degraded.
Can UV treat cloudy or muddy water?
No. Suspended particles shield organisms from the light. Sediment filtration ahead of the chamber is required, and heavy turbidity needs fixing before UV is worth fitting.
