UV for water treatment: the mechanism and its limits

UV for water treatment works by physics rather than chemistry. Shortwave ultraviolet light passes through the water and damages the genetic material of any microorganism it reaches, so the organism can no longer reproduce. Nothing is added and nothing is removed. Whether it works in a given house comes down to one thing: whether every drop receives enough light.

The mechanism, in one paragraph

Ultraviolet light in the shortwave band is absorbed by the DNA and RNA of bacteria, viruses and protozoa, forming bonds between adjacent bases that the organism cannot read or copy. The cell may still be intact and even metabolically active, but it cannot replicate, and an organism that cannot replicate cannot establish an infection. That is why the technical term is inactivation rather than killing. It also explains why nothing is filtered out: the dead and inactivated organisms stay in the water along with every dissolved substance that was there before, since light does nothing to a chemical that does not absorb it.

Dose is intensity multiplied by time

The single number that decides effectiveness is dose, and it is the product of how bright the light is at the water and how long the water is exposed to it. Both halves can fail. Intensity falls as the lamp ages, as the quartz sleeve fouls and as the water itself absorbs light. Exposure time falls as flow rate rises, which is why a system rated for a modest flow delivers a much smaller dose when a shower, a tap and a washing machine all run at once. Sizing on peak demand rather than average use is therefore not conservatism, it is the difference between treatment happening and not happening.

The lamp and the sleeve are the system

Almost everything that goes wrong with ultraviolet treatment is one of two parts. The lamp loses output steadily with hours of operation and reaches the end of its useful life long before it stops glowing, which is why annual replacement is standard and why a visibly lit lamp proves nothing about dose. The quartz sleeve that separates the lamp from the water is transparent when clean and progressively opaque as hardness, iron and manganese deposit a film on it, so it is wiped and inspected at every lamp change and more often on difficult water. What it cannot treat, and what municipal use tells you

Ultraviolet removes nothing. Lead, arsenic, nitrate, PFAS, hardness, sediment, chlorine and every other dissolved substance leave the chamber unchanged, and there is no residual to protect the plumbing beyond it. For a city household this technology is usually unnecessary, because community systems disinfect before the water leaves the plant, and every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, for which the EPA maintains a finder, showing what was measured. On a private supply, ultraviolet answers the biological question well and every other question not at all, so the rest of the treatment train is decided by the laboratory result.

Why does flow rate matter so much?

Can I tell if the lamp is still effective by looking at it?

No. Output decays long before the lamp goes dark, so a glowing lamp can be well under the intensity needed. Annual replacement and an intensity sensor are the reliable answers.

Does UV change the taste of water?

Not at all, because nothing is added or removed. If taste is the complaint, carbon filtration is the stage that addresses it and it usually sits ahead of the lamp.
