UV water treatment systems pass water through a stainless chamber around a lamp that emits ultraviolet light, and that light disables bacteria, viruses and protozoa so they cannot reproduce. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away: the water leaves with exactly the same chemistry it arrived with. That makes UV the cleanest disinfection option for a household well, and also the one most dependent on the water being clear before it arrives.
What the light does and does not do
Ultraviolet light at the germicidal wavelength damages the genetic material inside a microorganism so it cannot replicate, which ends its ability to cause infection. It leaves no residual, no taste and no byproducts, and it does not change pH, hardness, iron or anything else dissolved. That last point is the one households get wrong: a UV system does not remove lead, nitrate, arsenic, tannins or sulfur smell, and installing one because the water smells bad achieves nothing at all.
Clear water first, always
UV is a line-of-sight technology. Anything that shadows a microorganism protects it, so turbidity, sediment, iron, manganese and tannins all reduce the delivered dose. Standard practice is a sediment filter ahead of the UV, fine enough to strip the particles that carry passengers, plus iron and manganese removal where those are present. On a well with heavy iron, the sleeve fouls fast, and a system that looks like it is working delivers far less than its rated dose.
Lamps, sleeves and the annual service
The lamp sits inside a quartz sleeve that keeps it dry while letting the light through. Lamps do not fail dark: their output decays over about a year of continuous running, so they are replaced on the calendar, not when they stop glowing. The sleeve is cleaned at the same visit, because a film of iron or hardness on the quartz blocks light exactly as a dead lamp would. Sizing, alarms and power
A UV system is rated for a flow at a given dose, and exceeding that flow simply reduces the dose, silently. Size to the household's peak flow, not to the average. Fit a unit with a UV intensity sensor and an audible alarm where you can, since that is the only way to know the lamp is delivering. A power cut takes the disinfection offline while water keeps flowing, so treat any outage as a reason to run the line through afterward. Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so this is entirely the owner's watch.

Does a UV system remove iron or hardness?
No. UV disinfects only. It leaves chemistry untouched, so iron, hardness, nitrate, lead and sulfur odor all need their own treatment stages.
Why does the lamp need changing if it still lights up?
Output at the germicidal wavelength decays with hours of use even while visible light continues, so a lamp past its rated year is under-dosing without any visible sign.
What happens during a power outage?
