UV treatment of water passes the flow through a chamber wrapped around a lamp whose light disrupts the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce or cause infection. It adds nothing to the water and changes nothing about its taste or chemistry. That is the whole promise, and understanding its narrowness is what makes it a good buy or a wasted one.
Inactivation, not removal
A UV unit does not take organisms out of the water. It damages them where they are, so what leaves the chamber is the same water carrying the same cell debris, now unable to infect anyone. This matters for two reasons. It means UV cannot be judged by looking at the outlet, since treated and untreated water are visually identical, and it means UV must sit at the last stage of a treatment train, downstream of anything else, so nothing can recontaminate the flow between the lamp and the tap.
Clear water first, or the lamp is decorative
Light has to reach the organism. Sediment, turbidity, tannin color, iron and manganese all absorb or scatter the light and shield bacteria in the shadow of a particle. That is why a UV installation is almost always sold as a train: a sediment filter to take out the particles, an iron or manganese stage if the raw water carries either, and only then the UV chamber. Hardness matters too, because scale films the quartz sleeve around the lamp and cuts transmission steadily until nothing useful is getting through the glass.
Who this is for
Private wells are the main case. They are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, so no utility is testing or disinfecting them on the owner's behalf, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. A household on a well with a coliform positive result, a spring, or a seasonal cabin supply is the natural buyer. A household on a chlorinated city supply usually is not, since the utility already carries a disinfectant residual through the mains.
Living with a UV system
The lamp dims long before it goes dark, so it is replaced on an annual schedule rather than on failure, and the quartz sleeve is wiped clean at the same time with care never to touch the lamp glass with bare fingers. A power cut means untreated water, so a household that has lost power should flush the lines before drinking. Does UV treatment remove chemicals or hardness?
No. UV acts only on living organisms. Dissolved chemicals, nitrate, arsenic, hardness minerals and metals pass through completely unchanged.
Can I install UV on well water without any pretreatment?
