Water purification systems under sink: types and requirements

Water purification systems under sink come in three families: reverse osmosis, ultraviolet, and multi-stage carbon with specialty media. They solve different problems, and the choice starts with what your water test says rather than with what fits the cabinet. Fit comes second, but it is the constraint that kills more installs than anything else.

Reverse osmosis: the broadest reduction

A reverse osmosis system is the default when the concern is dissolved contaminants: metals, nitrate, dissolved solids, and a wide range of other things the membrane rejects. It is the most capable of the three and also the most demanding to install, needing a drain connection for the reject stream, a cold feed with adequate pressure, a dedicated faucet through the sink deck, and room for a storage tank. That tank is usually the deciding factor in a cabinet that already holds a disposal unit and cleaning supplies. Production is by the tankful rather than on demand, so an RO system suits drinking and cooking and is not the answer for filling a bath.

Ultraviolet: a barrier, not a filter

A UV lamp inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa by dosing them with ultraviolet light as they pass. It removes nothing: no taste, no metals, no sediment, no hardness. That makes it a targeted answer for a microbiological concern, most often on a well, and a poor answer for anything else. UV also has a hard requirement that catches people out, which is water clarity. Particles shield organisms from the light, so a UV unit needs a sediment filter ahead of it and needs that filter maintained. The lamp itself ages and must be replaced on schedule even though it still glows, because output falls long before it goes dark.

Multi-stage carbon and specialty media

A multi-stage carbon system is a set of cartridges in series: sediment, carbon block, and often a third cartridge with media targeted at a specific problem such as lead, fluoride or heavy metals. It runs on line pressure with no tank, no drain and no electricity, so it fits where an RO unit will not, and it delivers full flow on demand. The tradeoff is that it reduces what its media are built for and nothing else, so it is only the right choice when you know what you are treating. Certification for the specific claim matters here more than anywhere, since carbon systems are marketed with very broad language.

When the cabinet says no

Measure before you buy. You need room for the unit, room for a tank if there is one, clearance to swing cartridges out of their housings, and a path for a drain saddle if the system needs one. A garbage disposal, a deep basin, or a sink base with a shallow shelf all eat the space quickly. Questions people ask about water purification systems under sink

Does an under sink UV system purify all my water?

Only the water passing through it, and only microbiologically. UV inactivates organisms but removes no metals, taste, sediment or hardness.

Do all under sink systems need a drain connection?

No. Reverse osmosis does, because it sends a reject stream to waste. Carbon and UV systems run inline with no drain.

Will an under sink system treat my whole house?

No. It treats the single tap it feeds, so showers, laundry and other fixtures are unaffected and need a point-of-entry system if that matters.

What if there is no room under my sink?

A countertop filter or countertop reverse osmosis unit does the same job above the counter with no drilling, which also suits rentals.
