A full house purification system treats everything entering the building, and in practice it is a train of stages rather than one box: sediment first, then carbon or a specialty media, then disinfection where the supply calls for it. Purification, filtration and disinfection are three different jobs

Sellers use purification loosely, so read what a system physically does. A filter removes particles and adsorbs chemicals such as chlorine, taste and odor compounds. A softener exchanges hardness minerals and is not a purifier at all. Ultraviolet light inactivates bacteria and viruses but removes nothing, so it needs clear water ahead of it. Reverse osmosis strips dissolved solids through a membrane. A house that needs several of those outcomes needs several stages in the right order, which is why whole-house quotes vary so much in what they include.

On a city supply, start with the report the utility already sent you

The EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the agency maintains a finder to help you locate yours. That report tells you what is actually in the water leaving the plant, which usually narrows a whole-house project to a short list: chlorine or chloramine taste, disinfection byproducts, hardness, and any specific contaminant flagged in your area. Buying a five-stage purification train when the report shows a chlorine taste problem is paying for stages that will never do any work in your house.

On a well, nobody sends you a report at all

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the testing is the owner's job. The EPA estimates around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people and more than 23 million households, rely on private wells, and cites a USGS study of 2,100 private wells that found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. That is the case for testing before buying: a well train aimed at iron and sulfur is a different machine from one aimed at nitrate or bacteria, and only a lab report tells you which one you are shopping for.

How the stages are ordered and sized

Order follows protection: sediment removal first so the finer media are not blinded, then oxidation or specialty media for iron, manganese or sulfur, then carbon for chlorine, taste and organics, then softening, then ultraviolet last where it is used, because UV needs water that is already clear. Sizing follows flow, not house size: count the fixtures likely to run at once and match the service flow rating each unit publishes. An undersized tank starves the showers; an oversized one channels because it never sees enough flow to backwash properly.

What a whole-house system will not fix

A whole-house carbon system does not soften water, and no amount of media will change that; hardness needs ion exchange or a conditioner. Whole-house reverse osmosis exists but is a different class of equipment with storage, repressurization and drain requirements, and it is rarely the right answer to a taste complaint at one kitchen tap. Where the concern is drinking water only, a point-of-use unit at the sink treats the water people actually drink for far less equipment, and leaves the whole-house budget for the problem that genuinely affects every fixture.
