Its position matters: softener resin is fouled by oxidized iron, so it belongs downstream of the iron stage, never ahead of it. Carbon comes next when taste, odor or organic compounds are on the report, adsorbing them onto its granular bed. Neither of these stages disinfects anything; they exist for comfort, plumbing protection and palatability, which is why the chain is not finished yet.

The ultraviolet purifier, deliberately last

The final component is the ultraviolet chamber, and its position is the whole point: UV disinfects by exposing microorganisms to intense light, and anything that clouds or tints the water shades them from the lamp. Placed after every clarifying stage, the lamp receives clear water and does its job; placed early, it is defeated by the very contaminants the other tanks remove.
