Why the lab test is stage zero
Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act: around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people, rely on them, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. The order of the treatment train
Sequence matters as much as selection. Sediment filtration comes first, after the pressure tank, because particles foul every stage behind it. Iron, manganese and sulfur treatment comes next, typically an air-injection oxidizing filter of the kind SpringWell and others sell for well duty, because oxidized iron destroys softener resin and stains everything downstream. Softening follows where hardness justifies it. Disinfection, usually UV, goes near the end so the lamp sees clear, treated water. Choosing the disinfection approach
For a well with bacterial results, there are two working strategies. Shock chlorination sanitizes the well and plumbing after a contamination event, a repair or flooding: a strong chlorine dose sits in the system and is flushed out, then the well is retested. It is a reset, not ongoing protection. Continuous disinfection, most often a UV sterilizer sized to household flow, treats every gallon and is the answer when tests keep finding bacteria or the well is vulnerable by construction or location. Many owners use both: shock after events, UV for every day. Whichever applies, disinfection supplements the rest of the train; it does not replace filtration.
Keeping a purification system honest
A well system is never finished, only maintained. Retest the water on a regular schedule and after any change: new taste, new staining, nearby construction, flooding, a repair. Change sediment cartridges by pressure drop, service oxidizing media on the maker's schedule, keep salt in the softener, replace the UV lamp annually and clean its sleeve, and change RO cartridges on time. Keep the lab reports in a folder so trends are visible across years; a slow rise in nitrate or a shift in pH is exactly the kind of signal a single test misses but a series catches.
