Treating a well for drinking is a sequence, and doing it in the wrong order is how households end up with equipment that does not work. Test first, correct the well itself second, and only then build a treatment train in a specific order, because each stage depends on what precedes it and several will fail outright if placed wrongly.
Test before anything is bought
The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. A first analysis should cover coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, hardness, iron, manganese and total dissolved solids, plus arsenic, radon or others where local geology warrants it.
Fix the well before treating the water
Bacterial contamination is usually an entry problem rather than an aquifer problem. Check that the casing stands well above grade, that the ground slopes away, that the sanitary seal and cap are intact and vermin proof, and that surface water cannot reach the annulus. Look at septic separation, at abandoned wells nearby and at livestock access. Shock chlorinate and retest twice. A well that comes back clean and stays clean had a route in that you have now closed, which no filter would have addressed.
The order of the train
pH correction first where the water is acidic, because iron oxidation and several media depend on pH. Then sediment removal, a separator or backwashing tank on gritty water, so grit never reaches anything after it. Then iron and manganese treatment, since oxidized iron fouls softener resin. Then softening. Then carbon for chlorine, taste and organics. Then ultraviolet last of all, immediately before distribution, because it only works on water everything upstream has already made clear.
Point of use for what remains
Some contaminants are ingestion concerns rather than whole house ones, and treating them at one tap is both cheaper and more effective. Nitrate, arsenic and fluoride are the usual candidates, handled by reverse osmosis under the kitchen sink rather than by trying to treat the whole property. Where that is the plan, make sure every drinking and cooking outlet is covered and that everyone knows which tap is treated.
