What is well water, and how does it differ from mains supply?

Well water is groundwater: rain that has soaked through soil and rock into a water bearing layer called an aquifer, drawn back up through a borehole or a dug shaft by a pump on your property. The water itself is often excellent. What differs fundamentally from a mains supply is that nobody treats it, monitors it or reports on it except the owner.

How the water gets its character

Groundwater takes on the chemistry of what it passed through. Limestone regions produce hard water rich in calcium and magnesium. Granite and sandstone often produce soft and slightly acidic water that corrodes copper pipework. Iron and manganese are dissolved from the rock and arrive clear, staining only once they meet air. Arsenic, radon and fluoride occur naturally in particular geologies. None of this is contamination in the usual sense: it is simply what the ground contributed on the way through.

The types of well and why depth matters

Drilled wells reach a deep confined aquifer, are cased, and are generally the most protected from surface influence. Dug and bored wells are shallow, wide and much more exposed to whatever happens at the surface, including septic systems, livestock and runoff. Spring fed supplies are the most exposed of all. Depth is the best single predictor of microbiological risk, which is why a shallow well needs testing more often and is a far stronger candidate for permanent disinfection.

Who is responsible for it

You are, entirely. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. No report arrives, no sampling happens on your behalf, and problems are invisible until tested for. Annual testing is the minimum standard of care.

What owning one actually involves

A pump and a pressure tank that set the pressure at your taps and eventually wear out, a wellhead that must stay sealed and above grade with ground sloping away from it, and whatever treatment the water's own chemistry requires. The upside is real: no water bill, no chlorine, and often better tasting water than a treated mains supply. The obligation is testing and upkeep.
