Water treatment well water: test first, then build the train in order

Well water treatment is a sequence, not a product. Test first, then place each stage in the order that lets the next one work: oxidation and iron removal before softening, sediment before anything with a membrane or a lamp, and disinfection last. Fit the stages out of order and each one shortens the life of the one behind it.

Nobody is testing it for you

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the EPA estimates that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. There is no annual report arriving in the mail and no utility watching the numbers, so the first purchase is a lab test, not a system. The usual order of stages

A typical well train runs: sediment removal, then oxidation and filtration for iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide, then a pH neutralizer if the water is acidic, then a softener for hardness, then carbon for taste and organics, then ultraviolet disinfection, with a point-of-use reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink for anything left. The logic is protective. Grit ruins valves, oxidized iron fouls softener resin, acidic water eats copper and shortens equipment life, and ultraviolet only works on water that is already clear of the iron, hardness and turbidity that coat the lamp sleeve.

Match the stage to the test result

Sulfur smell that clears after a few minutes of running usually points at the water heater rather than the well. A rotten egg smell on the cold line points at hydrogen sulfide and needs oxidation. Orange staining is iron; black staining is manganese; blue-green staining is acidic water attacking copper. Coliform bacteria call for shock chlorination of the well itself followed by a retest, and only then a permanent ultraviolet unit. Buying equipment before you know which of these you have is how households end up with a softener that solves nothing and a filter that plugs in a fortnight.

Flow, drain and power before you buy

Every backwashing vessel in the train needs a backwash flow rate the well pump can actually deliver, and a drain that can accept it. Add the requirements up: a softener and an iron filter both regenerating on the same night can exceed what a modest pump and pressure tank will supply. Each vessel also needs somewhere to discharge, and on a septic system that discharge has to be planned rather than assumed. Ultraviolet needs power and a way to fail safe. These practical limits often decide the equipment more than the water chemistry does, so establish them before you take quotes.

Questions people ask about water treatment well water

How often should I test my well?

Annually for bacteria, nitrate and the basics, and again whenever the taste, smell or appearance changes, after flooding, or after any work on the well or pump.

Can one system handle everything in well water?

Rarely. Combination units exist, but iron, hardness, acidity and bacteria are removed by different mechanisms, so most wells end up with two or three vessels in series.

Does a softener treat bacteria in well water?

No. A softener exchanges hardness minerals for sodium and offers no disinfection. Bacteria are handled by shock chlorination of the well plus ultraviolet or continuous chlorination.

Should I treat the whole house or just the kitchen?

Both, usually. Scale, iron and odor problems affect every fixture and need point-of-entry treatment, while a specific drinking water contaminant is cheapest to handle at the sink.
