Water treatment for well water works best as a sequence rather than a shopping trip. Test the water, sort the findings into health risks and nuisances, fix anything wrong with the well itself before adding equipment, then install treatment in the order the chemistry requires. Doing it the other way around produces a utility room full of vessels that each solve a problem the previous one created.
Test first, because nobody else will
The EPA is explicit that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on one. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Order bacteria and nitrate as a baseline, add the metals and chemicals that local geology and land use make plausible, and use a certified laboratory rather than strips for anything health related.
Separate health risks from nuisances, then prioritize
Bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and lead are health findings and come first. Iron, manganese, hardness, sulfur odor and staining are nuisances: real problems, but they can wait a month. That ordering matters because budgets are finite and the visible problems are the ones that shout loudest. A household will happily spend on an iron filter to fix a stained bath while an unaddressed coliform result sits in a drawer, which is exactly the wrong way round.
Fix the well before you treat the water
A bacterial hit often means surface water is reaching the well: a cracked casing, a missing or damaged sanitary seal, a cap that lets insects in, or runoff pooling around the wellhead. Shock chlorination clears the current contamination but does nothing about the route in, so retest afterwards and keep retesting. Treating a compromised well with ultraviolet is putting a filter on a symptom. Inspect the wellhead, correct the grading and only then decide whether continuous disinfection is warranted.
Installing in order, and choosing who does it
Sediment first, pH correction next if the water is acidic, then iron and sulfur removal, then softening, then carbon, with disinfection last on clear water. Is shock chlorination a permanent fix for bacteria?

Do I need to treat the whole house or just the kitchen?
