Well filtration is almost never one device. It is a sequence of stages, each one handling a specific finding on your water test, arranged so that each protects the next. Get the test first and the order right, and every stage does its job for years. Get either wrong and you replace expensive media early while the original complaint persists.
Nothing is designed until the test comes back
Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no agency tests them and no report arrives in the mail. Around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on private wells, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Sediment first, always
Well water carries sand, silt and fines from the formation and from the pump itself, and every downstream device suffers from them. A sediment stage at the point of entry, either a large cartridge housing or a backwashing sediment filter for heavier loads, is the cheapest insurance in the whole train. On a well with a lot of grit, some installers run a coarse stage into a finer one so the inexpensive cartridge takes the load. Grit that reaches a softener packs the resin bed and causes channeling that no amount of salt fixes.
Then oxidation, softening and carbon in that order
Iron and manganese come next, because Penn State Extension notes they carry secondary aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and that oxidized iron fouls softener resin. A softener can take dissolved iron only where pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, so anything beyond that needs an air injection or chemical oxidation filter first. Softening follows, then carbon for taste, odor and organics, since carbon is the stage that suffers least from what comes before it.
Disinfection is the last stage, and it needs clear water
Where a test shows coliform bacteria, disinfection goes at the end of the train. Ultraviolet is the common household choice and is simple to live with, but it only works on water the light can pass through, which is exactly why sediment, iron and tannin removal come first. Continuous chlorination is the alternative where the same well also has iron and sulfur to oxidize. Low pH gets corrected before softening, since acidic water attacks plumbing regardless. Sediment cartridges are changed on pressure drop, carbon on its rated capacity, ultraviolet lamps annually regardless of whether they still glow, and the well retested every year.
