A filtration system for well water is designed backward from a lab report: each finding gets a stage, each stage gets a position, and anything the report did not find gets left out. The order is the engineering: sediment ahead of iron treatment, iron ahead of carbon, and disinfection last. Go finding by finding. Grit or turbidity: a sediment stage. Iron, manganese or sulfur smell: an oxidizing media tank. Off taste or leftover chlorination: carbon. Coliform bacteria: UV disinfection. Acidic pH: a neutralizer, placed early because acidic water corrodes everything it touches, including your new equipment. Hardness is a softener, which is treatment rather than filtration but joins the same train. A report with only one finding justifies only one stage; resist the packaged bundle that treats problems you do not have.

Why the order is not negotiable

Two failure modes drive the sequence. First, particles kill capacity: grit that reaches an iron tank or a carbon bed spends that media's life doing a sediment filter's job. So sediment goes first, iron treatment before any softener or carbon, and UV last where the water is already clear. Every misordered system eventually presents as a mystery failure of its most expensive stage.

Leave room for the system to change

Wells change with seasons, rainfall and pumping, so design for revision: unions at each stage, a bypass around the whole train, and straight pipe where a future tank could sit. Retest on a schedule and after any change in taste, smell or staining, then add or remove stages against evidence. Does every well need a full multi-stage system?
