Water filtration for well water is a design problem, not a shopping problem. The lab result names the contaminants, each contaminant has a stage that treats it, and the stages have to be arranged so each protects the next. A well owner who starts with a test spends less and ends up with a system that works than one who starts with a catalog.
Start with the test, because nobody else will
The EPA notes that private wells are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, that around 15 percent of the US population relies on them, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. Order coliform bacteria, nitrate, hardness, iron, manganese, pH, total dissolved solids and sulfide as a baseline, and add arsenic, uranium or radon where your region is known for them.
Match each finding to a stage
Sand and turbidity go to a sediment filter or a backwashing media tank. Iron and manganese go to oxidation plus a filter, whether that is air injection, catalytic media or a chemical feed. Sulfur odor goes to the same oxidizing stage. Hardness goes to a softener. Low pH goes to an acid neutralizer. Bacteria go to ultraviolet or a chlorine feed with contact time. Nitrate, arsenic and other dissolved contaminants usually go to a point of use unit at the sink rather than to whole house treatment.
Order is not negotiable
Sediment first, so grit never reaches a valve or a bed. Oxidation and iron removal next, because oxidized iron fouls softener resin. Acid neutralization before the softener where pH is low. Softening after all of that. Ultraviolet last, since it needs the clearest water and offers no residual. A chlorine feed is the exception that sits near the front with its contact tank and a carbon filter behind it. Penn State Extension's recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese are the thresholds that usually decide whether the iron stage is needed at all.
Size for peak flow, not average use
Each tank has a service flow rating and each cartridge a pressure drop, and they accumulate. A train sized on average daily use will disappoint the moment a shower and an irrigation zone run together. Work out the realistic simultaneous demand, check every stage clears it, and confirm the well pump can supply the backwash flow that media tanks need to lift their beds. A tank that cannot backwash properly packs down and channels, and then it filters nothing while looking perfectly healthy.
Where well owners overspend
The classic waste is treating the entire house for a contaminant that only matters in drinking water, when a sink unit would have done. The second is buying a softener to fix a taste or staining problem it cannot touch. The third is skipping the sediment stage to save money and then replacing a control valve.
