Nitrate, arsenic or other health contaminants typically add a point-of-use stage such as reverse osmosis at the drinking tap, since removing them house-wide is rarely economical.
Order and interaction between stages
Stages are not independent: each protects the next. Sediment removal keeps grit out of every downstream valve and media bed. Iron treatment must precede softening because oxidized iron fouls softener resin and shortens its life. Ultraviolet must come last because particles in unfiltered water shade microorganisms from the lamp. Getting the sequence wrong makes individually good equipment fail early, which is the most common flaw in self-assembled systems.
