Water filtration for well water: build the right treatment train

Water filtration for well water is chosen from a lab test, not from symptoms alone, because a private well's owner is the only one checking it. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and around 15 percent of the US population, more than 23 million households, rely on them. Once you know what is in your water, the equipment choice is usually straightforward: each contaminant maps to a specific stage in a treatment train.

Test first: the well owner is the regulator

Because no utility is testing your supply, the first purchase is a laboratory test covering bacteria, nitrates, hardness, iron, manganese, sulfur, pH and anything your county health department flags locally. The stakes are not theoretical: a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. The treatment train, in order

Well treatment is staged, and order matters. Sediment filtration comes first, protecting everything downstream from grit. Iron, manganese and sulfur removal comes next, usually an air-injection oxidizing filter or, for heavy loads, chemical injection with a retention tank ahead of a filter. A water softener follows if hardness is significant, placed after iron removal because oxidized iron fouls softener resin. Carbon filtration then polishes taste and odor. Ultraviolet disinfection goes last at the point of entry, after the water is clear, and a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink covers drinking-water concerns like nitrates or arsenic identified in the test.

Matching problems to equipment

Orange or brown staining points to iron and manganese and calls for an oxidizing filter. Rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide, handled by aeration or oxidant injection with catalytic carbon. White scale is hardness, a softener's job. Cloudy water is sediment, solved with the right cartridge or a backwashing turbidity filter. Coliform bacteria call for fixing the well itself, then continuous UV disinfection. Low pH that greens copper fittings needs a calcite neutralizer, installed before the softener because it adds hardness. What ownership looks like

A well treatment train is not fit-and-forget. Cartridges have replacement schedules, oxidizing media beds backwash on a timer and need a functioning drain, brine tanks need salt, UV lamps are replaced on the manufacturer's interval even though they still light, and chemical feed tanks need refilling. Plan the install so every stage is reachable, has a bypass and sits near a drain and power. Retest the water on a routine basis and after any flood, repair or change in taste, since the train was built for the water you had on test day, and wells change.

Questions people ask about water filtration for well water

Can one filter handle everything in well water?

No single unit removes sediment, iron, sulfur, hardness, bacteria and dissolved contaminants at once. Combination cabinets exist for light cases, but real well problems are solved by dedicated stages in the right order.

Do I need UV if my well test came back clean for bacteria?

Not necessarily, but one clean test is a snapshot. Wells that have ever tested positive, are shallow, or sit near livestock or septic systems are strong candidates for continuous UV, since contamination events do not announce themselves.

Why does iron removal go before the water softener?

Softener resin is designed for calcium and magnesium. Dissolved iron loads it, and oxidized iron particles foul it outright, cutting capacity and lifespan. Removing iron first protects the more expensive downstream equipment.

How often should a private well be retested?

There is no federal requirement, which means the interval is yours to set. A common practice is a bacteria and nitrate check every year, a broader panel every few years, and an immediate retest after flooding, well work or any change in taste, odor or color.
