Nothing is removed. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on one. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Municipal supplies arrive disinfected; a well does not. Ultraviolet gives a well owner continuous microbiological treatment without adding chemicals or changing the taste.
Clear water first, always
Ultraviolet works by light reaching the organism, so anything that blocks or scatters that light protects it. Sediment, turbidity, tannins, iron and manganese all reduce transmittance, and particles can physically shield organisms passing through. That is why ultraviolet is installed downstream of sediment filtration and any iron treatment, and why a system on cloudy water can run perfectly, with the lamp lit and the alarm silent, while treating almost nothing.
Sizing, dose and flow
Effectiveness depends on dose, which is the intensity of the light multiplied by the time the water spends in the chamber. A unit sized for a smaller flow than the house delivers gives every organism a shorter exposure, so the dose falls below what is needed. Manufacturers rate units at a flow and a water transmittance, so both figures matter. Good systems include a sensor that monitors actual intensity rather than assuming the lamp is fine because it is glowing.
The annual chores that keep it honest
Ultraviolet lamps dim long before they go dark, so they are replaced annually regardless of appearance. The quartz sleeve that separates lamp from water films over with mineral deposits and has to be removed and cleaned, gently, since it is fragile and skin oils on the glass reduce transmission. After a lamp or sleeve change the system should be sanitized. Does a UV water filter remove anything from the water?
No. It inactivates microorganisms with ultraviolet light but removes nothing at all, so sediment, metals, hardness and chemical contaminants pass through unchanged and need separate treatment stages ahead of it.
How often does a UV lamp need replacing?
Annually is the standard interval, because output falls steadily over time even though the lamp still appears lit. Running past the interval means the dose quietly drops below the level needed to inactivate organisms.
Can UV treat cloudy or iron stained water?
Not reliably. Particles and color absorb and scatter the light and can shield organisms from it, so filtration and iron removal must come first. Ultraviolet on unclear water is one of the most common silent failures in well systems.
Do I still need to test water that goes through a UV system?
Yes. Testing treated water is the only way to confirm the lamp, sleeve and dose are still doing their job, and it also catches contamination entering the plumbing downstream of the unit, where ultraviolet offers no protection.
