UV filter water systems: disinfection, not filtration

People search for a UV filter water system, but a UV unit is not a filter and removes nothing. It is a disinfection stage that inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa with light as water flows past a lamp. Understanding that difference is the whole point, because UV only works on water that has already been filtered clear, and it never replaces the filters in front of it.

Filtration and disinfection are different jobs

A filter physically removes or adsorbs something: sediment on a cartridge, chlorine on carbon, hardness on a resin bed. UV removes nothing at all. It damages the genetic material of microorganisms so they cannot reproduce, and the inactivated organisms leave with the water. That means a UV system cannot improve taste, cannot clear cloudy water, cannot reduce lead, nitrate or hardness, and leaves the water chemically unchanged in every respect. It is the correct answer to a coliform result and the wrong answer to almost every other water complaint.

What has to sit in front of it

UV works only if light reaches the organisms. Suspended particles shelter them, and dissolved iron, manganese and hardness coat the quartz sleeve with a film that steadily cuts transmission. A whole-house UV therefore sits last in the treatment train, downstream of sediment filtration and downstream of iron, manganese and hardness removal where the test calls for them. Manufacturers publish feed water limits for turbidity, iron, manganese and hardness precisely because these are the failure modes. Fitting UV alone on raw well water is the most common mistake, and it produces a system that looks like it is running while doing very little.

Sizing and where it goes on a well

The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so a well owner who wants continuous disinfection has to install it themselves. Size the unit for peak simultaneous household flow, because dose falls as flow rises and a unit sized for average use is undersized every time two showers run together. Install after the pressure tank and after all filtration, with unions either side so the sleeve can be serviced, and with a bypass so the house is not without water while the lamp is changed. Choose a unit with an intensity sensor and an alarm if the budget allows.

Coliform, shock chlorination and UV together

A positive coliform test is a prompt to investigate the well itself, since the usual cause is surface water entering through a failed cap, a cracked casing or a poor seal. Shock chlorination clears the existing contamination but does not stop it recurring if the fault remains. UV then provides continuous protection against whatever gets in afterward, which is why the combination of fixing the wellhead, shocking the well and installing UV is the standard response rather than any one of those alone.
