UV light filter: what it does and what it cannot do

A UV light filter is not really a filter. Water flows past a lamp inside a quartz sleeve and ultraviolet light scrambles the DNA of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce. Nothing is trapped and nothing is taken out, which means a UV unit is a disinfection stage, and it only works on water that is already clear.

What ultraviolet actually does to the water

The lamp emits germicidal ultraviolet at a wavelength that damages microbial genetic material as the water passes through the chamber. Dose is what counts, and dose is intensity multiplied by contact time, so a unit rated for a given flow will underperform if you push more water through it than it was sized for. There is no residual: once the water leaves the chamber it has no ongoing protection, so any contamination downstream of the unit is untreated.

It does not remove anything

Hardness, iron, lead, nitrate, arsenic, chlorine, taste and odor all pass straight through a UV chamber unchanged. If your complaint is scale on the fixtures or a metallic taste, ultraviolet will do nothing for you. A UV light filter answers exactly one question, which is whether living organisms in the water can still infect you, and it should be chosen only after a bacteria test says that is your problem.

Clear water in, or it does not work

Ultraviolet light has to reach the organism. Sediment, turbidity, tannins, iron and manganese all absorb or scatter the light and let bacteria hide in the shadow of a particle. That is why practically every UV installation sits behind a sediment cartridge, and behind iron or manganese removal where the well carries them. Water clarity is measured as ultraviolet transmittance, and a unit installed on cloudy water can run with its lamp lit while disinfecting almost nothing.

Lamps, sleeves and the failure you cannot see

A germicidal lamp keeps glowing long after its output has decayed below a useful dose, which is why manufacturers specify annual replacement rather than replacement on failure. The quartz sleeve around the lamp fouls with mineral film and has to be wiped with an acid cleaner when the lamp is changed. A visible-light glow is not proof of disinfection, so pick a controller with a real intensity sensor and an alarm if the water serves anyone with a weakened immune system.

Who should have one

Private wells are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and nobody samples them but the owner, so a well that has ever returned a positive coliform result is the classic candidate. So are cisterns, spring supplies, seasonal cabins reopened each year, and any home on a boil-water notice history. Questions people ask about uv light filter

Does a UV light filter remove chlorine or hardness?

No. Ultraviolet inactivates microorganisms and leaves dissolved minerals and chemicals exactly as they were. Chlorine needs carbon, and hardness needs a softener or a conditioner.

How often does the UV lamp need changing?

Most manufacturers specify once a year regardless of whether the lamp still lights, because ultraviolet output decays steadily with hours of use while the visible glow does not. The quartz sleeve gets cleaned at the same visit.

Can I install UV on water that has iron or sediment?

Not on its own. Particles and dissolved metals block ultraviolet light and shield bacteria, so sediment filtration and iron removal have to sit upstream of the chamber for the dose to be real.

Does UV treated water stay disinfected in the plumbing?

There is no residual disinfectant, so protection ends at the chamber outlet. Any bacteria entering downstream, for example through an open line during a repair, is not addressed and the plumbing may need sanitizing.
