UV water filters: disinfection without chemicals

UV water filters are not filters in the ordinary sense. Nothing is strained out and nothing is adsorbed. Water passes a lamp inside a quartz sleeve, and the ultraviolet light damages the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and protozoa so they cannot reproduce or cause infection. Everything else in the water leaves the unit exactly as it arrived.

What ultraviolet treats and what it leaves behind

Ultraviolet is a strong answer to microbial contamination, including bacteria, viruses and chlorine resistant protozoa such as cryptosporidium. It is no answer at all to anything chemical or physical: hardness, iron, nitrate, lead, arsenic, PFAS, taste, smell and sediment all pass through untouched. Sold correctly, a UV unit is the last stage of a treatment train that has already dealt with those, not a substitute for the rest of the system.

Clarity decides whether it works

The light has to reach the organism. Turbidity, suspended particles, iron, manganese and tannins all absorb or scatter ultraviolet, and organisms can shelter physically behind particles. This is why every UV installation has a sediment filter ahead of it, commonly a fine cartridge, and why wells with iron or color need that handled first. A unit running on cloudy water is still glowing and still tells you it is on, while doing far less than the rating on the box.

Where it fits on a private well

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so a well owner is the only person testing for bacteria. Ultraviolet is a reasonable continuous barrier for a well that has tested positive for coliform after the source has been investigated and shock chlorinated, and for households that simply want ongoing protection. It should not be used to paper over a well with a structural problem such as a cracked casing or surface water intrusion.

Lamp life, sleeves and the annual routine

A UV lamp keeps lighting long after its output has fallen below the level that disinfects, so lamps are replaced on the manufacturer's schedule, typically annually, rather than when they fail. The quartz sleeve around the lamp needs cleaning of the film that hard or iron bearing water leaves on it, since that film blocks the light as effectively as cloudy water does. Units with a sensor and an alarm are worth the extra, because they tell you when output has dropped.

Sizing, flow and power

The dose an organism receives depends on intensity and on how long it spends in the chamber, so a unit is rated for a maximum flow rate. Exceed it and the dose falls short. Size on peak household flow, not average use, and account for every fixture that might run at once. UV needs continuous power, so a well on a generator or an outage prone supply should have a plan for water drawn while the lamp is dark. Questions people ask about uv water filters

Does a UV system change the taste of water?

No. Ultraviolet adds nothing and removes nothing chemically, so taste, smell and mineral content are unchanged. Taste complaints need carbon or another filtration stage instead.

Do I still need to test for bacteria with UV installed?

Yes. Testing is how you confirm the unit is doing its job and that nothing has changed at the source. A sample taken downstream of the lamp is the check that matters.

Can bacteria grow after the UV unit?

It is possible in stagnant sections of plumbing downstream, since ultraviolet leaves no residual disinfectant in the water the way chlorine does. Keeping the treated side short and in regular use helps.

How much power does a UV system use?

A residential lamp runs continuously but draws modestly, comparable to a small household appliance left on. The lamp is left powered rather than switched with demand, because warm up time would leave gaps.
